Alternate Universe
Canon Point: After defeating Demise, but before being sealed again.
Background Link: Skyward Sword at the Zelda Wiki. Ghirahim's page for good measure.
AU Background: In the normal course of events, the goddess Hylia created a sword with a spirit inside of it known as Fi, to help guide her chosen hero on his journey when the time came.
Ghirahim is this version of the Goddess Sword's sword spirit. He was created specifically to help the hero Link on his quest to seal Demise once he awoke so he would never terrorize the land again. Unfortunately, creating someone for a specific purpose doesn't guarantee anything about their personality, and Ghirahim started out as kind of an asshole and became more so as time passed and he went unused.
When the hero finally pulled him from his pedestal, Ghirahim was unimpressed. Link had little to no combat experience, and was only reluctantly pulled away from his cozy life in Skyloft by the fact that the Demon Lady Fi had dragged Zelda down to the surface in a tornado and he had to go down to rescue her.
Throughout Link's journey on the surface, Ghirahim seemed more interested in insulting his master than providing him with help. He expected Link to figure out the puzzles and challenges himself, and as Link gradually got better at this and slaying his enemies, Ghirahim's respect for him started to increase.
You'd never know it from the way he talked, though. Making fun of Link was still his favorite past time.
Ghirahim's sword served Link well during his journey, being blessed by three sacred flames to become what is called the Master Sword. The blessed sword with the bitter spirit inhabiting it was able to even defeat Demise and restore peace to the land, much to Ghirahim's dismay - completing the journey he had actually begun to enjoy meant that he was going to be sealed up again, to wait for the day the chosen hero's reincarnation had reason to wield him.
Personality: From the way Ghirahim acts, you wouldn't expect him to be a holy sword. He's exceedingly vain, for one. He's the strongest sword there is, almost unmatched in his own combat abilities, and in his opinion better-looking than everyone else. Only his master has esteem from him comparable to his own opinion of himself. He's melodramatic in speech and gesture, and is hard to take seriously unless you've seen him in battle.
He loves battle too much to be healthy. Battle is in his blood, so to speak, and he enjoys it more than anything else, usually suggesting the violent solution to any problem first or being unnecessarily savage when dealing with demon opponents. He can be held back for the sake of completing the quest, but he doesn't have to like it. And when he doesn't like things, you'll know it - while he can normally fake some measure of politeness, he has a great deal of trouble hiding his anger or keeping composure when things don't go his way.
Ghirahim does not care about your personal space. He does not care about you at all unless you're his master, and he enjoys getting under people's skin. Whether that's by getting way too close and touchy-feely with them, not being able to keep his creepy long tongue in his mouth, or just by descriptive threats, he enjoys freaking other people out (even his master).
He has a few positive traits. He's goal-oriented, for one. He never forgets what he's meant to be doing and will not-subtly steer his master's actions towards their goals if he gets off track doing sidequests. Ghirahim was made for a single purpose, and though he doesn't necessarily like everything he has to do, not fulfilling that purpose is not an option.
He can... sort of fake being polite and gentlemanly. While it's easy enough to raise his anger and shatter the illusion, normally he's calm and treats others who are beneath him as not worth the time to get annoyed at. He is a grand sword spirit and they are only regular humans - they should be awed by his presence, but it's only understandable they'd be too stupid to recognize a superior, so it doesn't bother him too much.
He's extremely loyal to his master. Even after meeting Link and immediately disliking him, the thought of betrayal would never have crossed his mind. He doesn't hand-hold anyone, it's pointless since that would keep them from learning and getting good enough to not need him, but he won't allow his master to die if it comes down to that. By the end of the game, when Link is actually worthy of respect, the only one allowed to insult his master is him - anyone else trying it will get the sharp end of his sword.
As much as Ghirahim is and will always be an asshole, and resents much of his duty as the spirit of the hero's sword, he's not an actively malicious or evil person until you give him reason to hate you. Then you'd better start running.
Abilities: Several!
-Superhuman strength/speed/stamina: Ghirahim is better in all physical respects than any normal human.
-Teleportation: He can teleport anywhere he wants to, and usually does so frequently in a single conversation.
-Sword summoning: Ghirahim can summon many kinds of swords, to tiny daggers to rapiers to a giant broadsword.
-Barriers: Ghirahim can create magical barriers, although their strength varies.
-Telekinesis: Ghirahim can lift objects magically, such as people.
-Secondary form: Ghirahim has a truer form with zero weaknesses save the diamond on his chest. He rarely uses all of this form, using it only for incredibly serious battles where he might actually have a chance of losing. (He doesn't think of many battles that way.)
-Weapon form: Ghirahim is the spirit of the now-Master Sword. The sword he turns into is shaped more like the original Ghirahim's sword, but has a different color scheme and a holy aura that prevents evil beings from even touching it. It is a powerful blade that does significant damage to the hero's enemies, and can deliver blows charged with energy from the heavens in order to deal more damage or activate items left for the hero.
Sample Entry: Ghirahim manages to avoid eating the oatmeal for a long time, by virtue of not living off of food at all. Eventually there's a chocolate cake he wants to try, and that means sitting down and slogging through the miserable oatmeal.
It's food more suitable for peasants and those with no sense of taste than him, and he almost gags. Do the makers of this tower have nothing even slightly better to offer him? He'd take the plainest of sandwiches, or any kind of fruit over this garbage! Really, anything but insects.
He doesn't understand how his master can watch insects being used to infuse his potions and then still be willing to drink them. He'd never have raised the bottle to his lips. Link has always been willing to humiliate himself in the name of the quest; that's the only reason such an inexperienced child was ever manage to complete the journey.
He misses his master. A frown crosses Ghirahim's face. After being this long at his side, being without him is a feeling Ghirahim doesn't want to have to get used to. He wouldn't tell Link that out loud, of course. No reason to give the boy an ego.
